You’ve worked your fingers to the nubby bone and have finally arrived at the long awaited momentthe Annual Family Vacation! Oh, but don’t forget with that comes the Annual Family Vacation Showdown. But I think there is one thing that all agree on and that is everyone has a personal desire on how they want to savor their holiday.

And so the glossy dog-eared travel guides pile up on the packed coffee table. Enchanted children’s theme parks, couples exotic hideaways, and sleep amongst the King of Beasts extreme adventure trips. Choices and packages but which one is best for your clan of many interests?

Well, after many years of vacationing with my own motley crew, I have found THE resort at THE location. In fact, I’ve frequented this spot so many times that I’m registered somewhere between an elated local and a clued-in visitor. Wearing a sombrero of endless blue sky and a poncho of shimmering crystal clear water, the island of Cozumel, which nestles along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula , offers the contrast of old world Mexico with a Caribbean flamboyance. The isle teems with amazing contrasts from gentle lapping waters as clear as glass for superb diving and snorkeling on one side, to extreme waves on the other side for some wild surfing and gazing out at rock formations that are sprayed with the sea.

This isle has all the fixin’s: three distinctive types of beacheswhite confectionary sugar sand with gentle lapping waves; “iron shore” rocky beaches for oh-wow! snorkeling; and assisted-by-man strand where sand was dumped over natural limestone rock shoreline for breathtaking glances of underwater life and a great beach to play and lie on.

Jacques Cousteau introduced us to the mind-blowing diving along the 32 km long reef system and combined with this main ingredient, add the la carte dishes of fishing the shallow lagoons for barracuda, gray snapper, tarpon, and bonies; sailing into one incredible sunset, soaking up the sun, and many other activities; and you’ll have a island buffet that will please anyone’s flavor.

Once a fishing village on perpetual siesta, now a mecca for many of the finest cruise lines, San Miguel, the isle’s only town, presents off-the-beaten-path charms with vendors still pushing wares on wheeled carts alongside a bustling on-the-beaten-path metropolis with shopping malls. Hard-working locals and hard-playing tourists hang together all over this little town.

You may go as “touristy” as you’d like with the Hard Rock Cafe, Fat Tuesdays, and new American-style malls along the most concentrated visitor’s path. Or you can live like the Cozumeleos and trudge a few blocks in from the “cruise ship strip” to the shops with no names and get the locals’ prices and full Mexican culture, such as folkloric dances and parties on Sunday nights in the town square where entire Mayan and Mexican families come out to play. During this time, there is always some free happening going on and the local food is not only so inexpensive, it is so delicious! No matter how you slice it or perhaps want to mix it, you’ll find the perfect blending which will thrill everyone’s tastes.

In the heart of it all, one mile from downtown and three miles from the airport, nestles the Hotel Cozumel and Resort at Carretera Costera Sur Km 1.7, Cozumel , Mexico 77600. This means that you are near everything and will save mucho dinero on transportation costs. It’s Cozumel ’s favorite hotel for divers and a great have-it-all resort for families.

Resembling the Beverly Hillbillies clan with our hodgepodge luggage,Wal-Mart bags (those blue plastic bags can be used for anything!), and at least three guitars, boogie boards, and whatever else kids seem to think that they need, we pour out of the shuttle and immediately the children scatter everywhere. You can never be discreet with three kids!

It is a flawless check-in as the bilingual reception staff patiently puts up with our elated kids and welcomes us to the resort. The open-air lobby with its three-story ceiling, glass doors wide open, and enormous tropical plants all around blends outdoor with indoor, a trademark of the Caribbean.

We utilize the all-inclusive (all meals, domestic drinks, non-water sports, childcare, activities program, hotel amenities, private beach club access, billiard games, tennis, gratuities, & taxes includedphew!) option for with the way this group eats let’s just say that the hotel may lose money! I have lodged at many all-inclusive resorts in the past and the Hotel Cozumel Resort’s price is by far the best value.

A couple standing next to me chooses the European plan as they will get their own food or dine out. I can see how Mr. and Mrs. DINK (Double Income, No Kids) can afford to do this. Hmmm . . . and I must wonder if they are Dinks then what are we? Dorks? No income, double kids?

My son takes one step outside, looks at the largest pool on the island beckoning his graceful belly flop, colorful mounds of American and international fare at the poolside La Terraza bar and grill, nonstop activities and says, “Well, I guess this is goodbye” as he salutes us and makes plans to disappear for the next five weeks. (Yes, you hear me correctly. It’s a five week stay!)

We scan the courtyard and it is huge! I notice ramps for the disabled and elevators to get to all three floors. The resort encircles the beautiful tiled courtyard and in the center is a pool so enormous that it comprises several smaller pools with different depth levels to meet various needs for lazing, activities, Jacuzzi, children, and well, for swimming. Pools within a pool!

My children are already hooking up with new amigos from Merida as they sit under the shade of a palapa to enjoy their own version of “grown-up” drinks. My youngest downs about four Shirley Temples and dons the tropical flower garnish (toothpick and all!) in her hair. The two teenagers run around the pool with heaping plates of chicken nuggets and French fries hoarded from the poolside snack bar, as if the food supply would end! I see the cocinero is also cooking up some fresh burgers upon the children’s request. I can also see my rules are flying right out the window! But hey, it’s vacation!

It’s vacation! Those words ring in my ears and I head to the open gym to check out the equipment. A sea breeze wisps by as I climb on to the treadmill and look out at the glistening pool and the secluded courtyard. The activities staff in their red polo shirts is rehearsing for the nightly show. The shows range from comedy, family, to all-out aesthetic dances of the culture.

Walking . . . no skipping…to our room with silly smiles upon our faces, a “swish, swish, swish” sound starts and never ends. It is the sound that we hear all over the island. The swishing is from all the sweeping that goes on. Sweeping must be a favorite national pastime for it goes on night and day and the people even smile while performing this task! I, for one, have never smiled incessantly while sweeping, nor have I ever swept incessantly, as a matter of fact.

“Fresh paint” announces the sign as we round the bend to our rooms. The hotel is huge and very large hallways lead us. Ahh . . . tranquility whispers the cerulean walls which mimic the sea. Hues from the brown family-beige, chestnut, mahogany, cocoaof the furnishings bring raw elements of the island inside. Like all rooms, ours consists of direct touchtone telephones, satellite TVs, safety deposit box, hair dryer, hooks about diving, large closets, plenty of storage space, and an A/C that worked way too well! Immaculate housekeeping each day means our rooms are swish-swish swept, freshly picked flowers from the lush, well-groomed gardens, and footpaths leaving a tropical scent, and tissues and towels meticulously folded into swans, hearts, and even little smiling people.

“Oh wow! Lookie at the pool from here!” my youngest yells as she scurries in from the arched-covered balcony and immediately starts pouncing on one of the cushy beds. I discover that every room has a private balcony that offers an ariel view of the island’s largest pool or a terrace with a fresh look of the hand-scaped garden (all work is done by hand around here), and views of the staff sweeping and sweeping and sweeping . . .

Throwing sunscreen at my husband’s back, I quickly follow the rest of the clan toward palm-shielded lounge chairs. Cindy and Mike with the Activities Staff greet us energetically and ask if the girls want to join them in the Kids’ Club and Kids’ Playground. Children from around the world are in the pool preparing for a water balloon war and reciting their daily Spanish lesson in song at the same time.

After a few hours of melting into the chaise lounger, I am not able to read any of the books I brought, nor listen to my CD player, nor jot notes in my journal, but just lie in utter stillness and peace. “Palm Tree Syndrome” they call it here. It’s as if layers of stressare starting to peel away. No shallow ambitions, no material bondage, complete freedom of mind, body, and spirit.

Pictures of undersea life and soothing water sounds illuminate our way through the underground walkway leading to the hotel’s private beach club. My husband is drooling over the complete dive center with snorkeling, scuba diving, and certifications galore.

The children are dropping in one by one from the private pier with its gleaming white gazebo and its glass bottom. What an incredible backdrop against a turquoise sea and powder blue sky with wispy clouds. No wonder many wedding promises are sealed here!

Our clan, like most people, tends to opt for wide beaches and shallow waters but at the Hotel Cozumel Resort, dropping into the sea means we have instant access to the incredible live tropical aquarium without having to pay the prices of a snorkeling or diving tour. There is also a wonderful beach for the landlubbers in the family and a pool which peeks at the Caribbean.

Ethiopia is an enchanting country whose delights are unknown to most travelers. And yet this is a truly unique destination with such attractions as can be found nowhere else in the world. The biggest draw is the rich Orthodox Christian heritage. Ethiopia was one of the very first nations to embrace Christianity, way back in the 4th century AD. The wonderful churches, monasteries, icons and relics to be found here is a reminder of the central role the Church has played in the history of the country. The painstaking effort summoned to produce some of these tokens of mans faith in God is very impressive, especially for non-believers.

Ethiopia is a very worthy destination and many connoisseurs consider it to be Africa’s best-kept secret. Since so few outsiders come here, the tourist infrastructure is not well developed. But on the plus side, there are no crowds of visitors, unlike at other historical destinations such as Egypt. The Christian heritage aside, Ethiopia is blessed with an astonishing contrast of nature’s gifts. This ranges from the heights of the jagged peaks of the Simien mountains- a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bird filled rift valley lakes, to the under sea level lunarscape of the Danakil Depression.

Travelers have plenty of opportunities to enjoy mountain treks, caving, camping, sailing and white water rafting adventures. Though not as abundant as elsewhere in east Africa, there is plenty of wildlife, and 31 rare species are only found in Ethiopia. This is also one of Africa’s great birding destinations and 861 species have been recorded of which 16 are endemic. Awash National park is one of the finest and most accessible reserves in the country. The Awash River strides the park before heading to the Dankil depression where it vanishes, never to reach the sea. Some special attractions in the park
include the Awash Falls, the dormant Fantale volcano and some thermal springs. Forty-six species of wildlife have been identified here and the bird life is prolific. The park is located just 211 km to the east of Addis.

You will obtain best value for your Ethiopia trip if you have at least an interest in the unique history of the country. The country claims a history going back 5,000 years, and there are Bible episodes mentioning Ethiopia that are dated at least 3,000 years ago. The colorful history is a blend of fact, legend, and tradition. The country still uses the Julian calendar, which has 12 months of 30 days each and an additional month of 5 days, with 6 days in a leap year. Relative to the Gregorian calendar used in the west, Ethiopia is 7 years behind
between 11th September and 8th January and 8 years for the rest of the year.

Festivals of the Orthodox Church are an ingrained part of popular culture. Timket, feast of Epiphany, is a colorful 3-day festival commemorating the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Meskal, celebrates the “finding of the true cross” upon which Jesus was crucified, by Empress Helana -mother to Constantine the Great. It is believed that a fragment of the True Cross is to be found in a monastery in Gishen Mariam. Meskal has been celebrated in the country for over 1600 years. Other Orthodox festivals include the Ethiopian
New Year (Enkutatash) and Christmas (Lidet).

Though a friendly people, Ethiopians are fiercely independent and even today appear to distrust outsiders a little bit. This may appear justified when you consider that foreigners such as the British and Italians are guilty of looting historical relics. The Italians carried off to Rome a 150-tonne granite obelisk from Axum, when they occupied the country between 1936-41. Mussolini had sought a rematch of the 1896 defeat by Ethiopia that had greatly humiliated Italian patriots. The British had earlier in 1868 stolen priceless illuminated manuscripts, crowns, crosses, and other treasure. Ethiopia has been waging a campaign to have the artifacts returned.

Most of the historical treasures date from time King Azena of Axum converted to Christianity in the 4th century AD. The highlights of the “Historic Route” are Debre Libanos, Debre Markos, Bahar Dar, Gondar, Axum, Lalibela and Harar. You can reach these sites by air or car, or a combination of both. The route starts at Debre Libanos, 110 km from Addis Ababa. Here in the 13th century, Saint Tekle Haymanot performed a fantastic feat- he stood on one leg for 7 years! A cathedral marks the spot where this happened.

In 1937, during the Italian occupation, the monks of Debre Libanos annoyed the Fascist overlord who ordered the execution of 297 of them. If you are traveling by road, you can pause at Debre Markos, 305 km north of Addis to see the church of Markos with its beautiful paintings of Biblical scenes.

Bahar Dar is located on the shores of Lake Tana and is 560 km from Addis Ababa. The 3,000 sq km Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s biggest and is the source of the Blue Nile. Just 30 km after leaving Lake Tana, over a maximum width of 400m, the Blue Nile drops over 45 m. The result is the phenomenon of the Blue Nile Falls, otherwise known to locals as Tississat or “Smoke of Fire”. The falls are a spectacular sight and the spray mist produces rainbows and rainforest vegetation that forms a habitat to monkeys and many colourful birds.

Lake Tana has 37 islands, some of which harbor churches and monasteries. These buildings carry beautiful murals and paintings, remains of emperors, church crosses, icons, manuscripts, crowns and other articles of historical and cultural significance. Some of the monasteries such as Kebrane Gabriel preserve ancient customs and do not allow entry for women. You can break your historical tour by sailing on the Tana. Boats are available for hire at Bahar Dar. The lake
is also a delight for bird watchers. Flights are available to Bahar Dar, and some reasonable quality hotels too.

Gondar is 748 km to the northwest of Addis and rests on the foothills of the majestic Simien Mountains. Founded by Emperor Fasilidas, it was the 17th century capital of Ethiopia. Noteworthy attractions here are the cathedrals, castles, and other imperial buildings that were built by Fasilidas and his succcessors. The architectural style combines Axumite, medieval European and Arabian influences. An Indian architect designed the most magnificent of them. For Cathedrals, the most impressive is the hilltop positioned Debre Berhan Selassie (Trinity Church of the Mountain of Light). The city declined after 1855 when Tewodros II removed his capital to Debre Tabor and was subsequently looted in the 1880’s.

Axum, one of the key stops on the historical routes, dates back at least 2,000 years. The ancient city is particularly important in the history of the Orthodox Church, as it was the seat of King Azena when he converted to Christianity in the 4th century AD. Every year, the site known as Queen Sheba’s bath is the focal point of the ceremony of Epiphany. Archeologist’s think that the site and others such as Queen of Sheba Palace were merely named after the famous queen for the city had not been founded in her lifetime.

In its heyday, Axum was a vital and sophisticated kingdom that produced the written language that survives to this day known as Ge’ez. Though Axum is mostly identified with its trademark monolithic stelae, it has other important ruins such palaces and imperial tombs. The stelae were carved from single blocks of stone as markers of the burial places of kings. These were the biggest monolith structures ever made anywhere in the world. Out of the 11 identifiable large stelae, only one stands today at 24 m. In 1937, the Italian dictator Mussolini ordered one of the structures to be dismantled and raised again in Rome.

Axum is also known for the 17th century Cathedral of St Mary of Zion. Legend has it that the original Ark of the Covenant is housed here. The monks jealously guard this treasure and do not allow anybody to view it. This stand has led to much speculation that this object of immeasurable historical and religious value may not actually be in the hands of the monks of St Mary of Zion.

Lalibela is renowned for its marvelous 11 rock hewn churches built in the 12th century AD. The very devout King Lalibela commissioned them, not as monuments, but really as an act of worship. The churches were each carved from a single block of stone. Some are in trenches below ground; while others are built in open quarry caves. Legend has it that the churches were built with great speed because angels continued working the night shift while mortals slept. The result was truly magnificent and the very learned people at UNESCO have declared Lalibela a World Heritage Site. The churches are living monuments and are still in use today. Of all the historic attractions, Lalibela is the one you should not miss.

Harar, unlike other centres on the historic route is associated with Islam. The town with its city wall, towers and narrow streets has the feel of Arabian Nights about it. Founded in 1520, the city is 523 km to the east of Addis. It is an important centre of Islamic learning and has all of 99 mosques. Indeed it is believed to rank fourth in the ranking of holy cities of Islam after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The first Muslims are said to have reached Ethiopia in the lifetime of prophet Mohamed. The city is also famous for its handicrafts,
colorful woven baskets, and silverware. It was also once the home of the French poet Rimbaud.

If the evening finds you in Harar, you may witness a most bizarre spectacle courtesy of the so-called Hyena Men. With wild howls, these fearless men summon hyenas from the hills. They then get the ruthless scavengers to snatch pieces of meat from their hands or even their mouths!

In the east of the country towards the Dankil Depression and to the west near Sudan, the climate is very hot and dry. The central highland region is temperate, and nights can get chilly. Rains come twice a year- the rather irregular short
rains from January to March and the long rains from June to September. The best time to visit Addis and the highlands region is the dry October – June period. The traveler is advised to dress very light in the lowlands and desert country.
In the highland region, temperatures average 16C and warmer clothing comes in handy at night and early morning.

Some Addis Ababa hotels are of international standard. A few other towns and locations on the Historical Route and other tourist attractions also offer reasonable accommodation. West Point
West Point Virginia is located six miles off Interstate 64 between Richmond and Williamsburg and has a population of roughly 2,900 people. Property tax rates are low compared to more congested areas of Virginia. Many families want to live in West Point, because the school district is so outstanding it falls within the top 10 school districts of Virginia each year. West Point is a quiet Southern town, with some stunning 19th and early 20th Century architecture in the historic district. West Point is located at the place where the Mattoponi and Pamunky Rivers join the York River. The island has a nautical ‘Cape Cod’ feel to it without ostentatious neighbors or the high property taxes and cost of living. Gywnn’s Island is three miles long and two miles wide and has a population of roughly 900. A number of residents have notoriously lived past 100 in this part of Chesapeake Bay country. Waterfront estates are found along the perimeter and the center of the island is still dotted with small waterman’s cottages, many converted to second homes or vacation homes. John Dixon, author of Gwynn’s Island: a Brief History, describes Gwynn’s Island as “happy homes and fertile farms on smiling waters.”

One of the most interesting places to visit in Shanghai, china is the the Bund. It is located in the Huangpu district, in the central part of Shanghai. It is a place you can go and relax with your spouse or girlfriend or even by yourself. It is an open place that overlooks the Huangpu River. This river runs right across the city of Shanghai. On the other side of the Bund is the Oriental Pearl Tower. The tower is about 396 ft high and can be seen clearly from the Bund.

At the Bund, there are relaxation spots where you can sit, take pictures and generally feel the cool breeze from the river. You are sure to find the usual hawkers of various kinds of souvenirs and fake wrist watches of all kinds. If you want you could pay a small amount of yuan (chinese currency)and take a ride on one of the numerous boats that ply the river so that you can have a good view of the Oriental Pearl Tower from the river. One of the interesting things you can do on the Bund is take pictures with your back to the tower. The background is fantastic. You could even use the picture for a postcard.

The oriental pearl tower is another very interesting tourist spot to visit. The tower, when you get close to it, is an achitectural masterpirce and a beauty to behold. It is just like the Eiffel tower in paris. You pay a small amount to enter through the base of the tower where the lift that will take you up is situated. There are three stages of the tower corresponding to three differrent hieghts. The higher you go the more money you pay. I highly recommend going all the way to the top. That is where the best view is. The lifts are high speed lifts that will take you to the top in seconds. This is also a good spot for taking pictures. Two most interesting things about the tower is the view, which is fantastic from the top most spot on the tower. Another is the sourvenirs you can find. This a place to buy gift items of various kinds that depict the city of shanghai. There are restaurants and spots where you can relax to catch your breath,and take pictures.

Another interesting place in Shanghai is the Peoples Square. This is an historic place. It used to be where people go to gather to make speeches. The place is made up of beautiful flowers and scenery.

Very close to the peoples square is one of the most famous shopping street in the whole of china. That is the Nanjin street. It is a street with modern shopping malls comparable to malls like printemp or galarylaffayete in paris. Here you will find all you could ever dream of having. That is if you have the money to pay for it. The prices of items here are government controlled. That is you may not find great differences in prices of items amongst the various shops. But you are free to bargain. Usually with a calculator.There are many peculairities of life in China. Especially for a foreigner. These are things anyone should know before visiting China.
