A Tenerife Holiday has more to offer than you think. Museums abound.

If you are happy to while away your days on the beaches or around the pools of Tenerife then that’s fine but there are other things to do.

Like museums in the UK those on the island of Tenerife have had to move with the times to keep themselves interesting and motivating. The four I bring you to here have risen to the challenge and won. You will be happy with your day out and so will the children.

Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos (Museum of Science and the Cosmos)
Interactive exhibits abound from understanding how Black Holes work to finding your weight on other planets. The museum is housed in a large hall so no danger of little Sarah disappearing. There is a games and puzzle room and a number of large exhibits such as “flying over a huge 3-D map of Tenerife. Look out for the volcano!
An excellent planetarium is also housed on the site.
English versions of most information are provided.
The museum is located in La Laguna
Calle Via Lactea
Corner of Avenido de los Menceyes and Camino de la Hornero
Cruz de Pieda exit from TF5

Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre (Museum of Nature and Man)

A wide range of exhibits are to be found at this Museum in central Santa Cruz.
The Gaunches, the original inhabitants of the Tenerife are featured fully including a very popular mummies display. You can learn much about their way of life, their art and their customs. Of course the history of the people on Tenerife since the conquest of the island is also covered. You will also find exhibits covering topics from agriculture to marine life.

Housed in a converted hospital the building and interior now exudes style and grace.

There are English translations at the entrance of each room but you may also like to hire an audio guide in English from the reception desk.

This museum is in Santa Cruz
Calle Fuente Morales
near to Plaza de Espaa and the bus station

Museo de la Historia de Tenerife (Tenerife Museum of History)

As you would expect, this museum records the history of Tenerife and the Canaries from the 15th to 20th centuries. The emphasis is very much on post conquest society and developments. The museum is housed in one of the few remaining 16th century buildings. It has been beautifully restored to its original glory and is a joy to see in itself. Casa Lercaro was built by a former Governor of Tenerife in 1593.
The displays are all in Spanish but at Reception you can obtain an English booklet which contains all the information you might need.

This is in La Laguna
Casa Lercano, Calle San Agustin, 22, near the Cathedral.

Museo de Antropologia (Museum of Anthropology)
One and half meters along the TF16 between Valle de Guerra and Tacoronte.

The final museum is located in the countryside on a 21000 square meter site. Indigenous plants abound and these are well complemented by various tropical plants. Other aspects of country life are to be seen from wine press to agricultural implements. In the house you can view traditional artefacts from across the Canary Islands.
The house is another exercise in restoration done really well. The Casa de Carta was built in the early years of the 18th century. A country house set around a central patio.

This museum is difficult to get to without a car but well worth the visit if your do have transport.

Opening Times
All museums operate to the same time table and admissions charges.
Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 7 pm
Monday closed.

Admission 3
Under 8’s free

Hotel MaiTai Polynesia in Matira, Bora Bora

Hotels on Bora Bora can get pricey. Unless you find a package deal, you will be shocked by what you will see. We were shocked anyway. Our dreams of staying in an “over the water bungalow” were dispelled when we learned that this accommodation type will set us back at least five hundred dollars per night. Yikes. Our basic requirements included air conditioning and a clean room. Hotel MaiTai was offered to us by our Tahitian travel agent and we accepted … Let’s go to Bora Bora … woohooo

Most hotels, including MaiTai, have small booths set up at the airport. They will greet you there and you have no problems with getting to your destination. The greeting at the hotel includes a glass of pineapple juice and fragrant tropical flowers. We chose a room in the hotel building area because this was the most affordable. It was large, well furnished, open, air-conditioned and clean. Nice. It had a small balcony which we did not use since it was too hot to hang around there and we wanted to be on the beach anyway. Breakfast was included and it was good, with a solid selection of pastries, breakfast meats, cereal, fruit, coffee, orange juice … you know the standard … The beach in front of the hotel is not that great. This beach is definitely not the reason to visit Bora Bora. The hotel does offer free boat rides to the motus (small islands in the lagoon) where you can swim in the crystal light blue waters to your heart’s content. Matira beach is also a five minute walk from MaiTai and it is just plain gorgeous. The location of the hotel is quite convenient. Apart from Vaitape, this is where it’s at in Bora Bora. Service was solid at the hotel. It seemed like the employees were not too quick to help out though. They would smile and acknowledge your request, but then take a loooong time to do anything about it. I guess that’s the way it is around here. You can arrange all sorts of extra activities at the desk as well. Close to the Hotel there is a very well equipped supermarket with prices that match those in Southern California. There are quite a few eating establishments around here if you do not want to always eat at the hotel restaurant.

To sum it up: Location is good to serve as a base for exploring the island. If you would like to just lay around and relax, you are better of going elsewhere, since the beach here is not that great and you will have to walk or take a boat to a true tropical paradise area. We were happy with the stay here since we really did not hang around the hotel too much. Being in Bora Bora is not about being at the hotel anyways. It is about being in the most amazing blue lagoon anywhere. Recommended for active people and people on a budget. If you have the money, go to one of the other resorts whose prices match the out of this world experience.

P.S. Oh my god … Honeymooners are everywhere. I don’t think we saw anyone that was not on a honeymoon. … everyone coupled up …

Travel to Japan and Experience the Far East

If you’re determined to explore Asia but unsure which country to visit, you might want to set your sites on Far East Asia and travel to Japan. Here is some general but useful information that is good to know when you travel Japan. It will help you get a better understanding of Japan before your trip and allow you to experience Japan more comfortably.

About the Country
Japan consists of four main islands and several smaller ones. Together the islands take the shape of a sea horse and occupy an area of 377,435 square kms. Tokyo, the capital city, is very modern and bustling with activity, so when you travel to Japan, be ready for a few crowds. The landscape of Japan, away from the big cities, is mountainous with spectacular scenery; some of the mountains are volcanic. Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, and is known for its symmetrical slopes.

About the Climate
When you travel to Japan, it’s important to know the country’s seasons and when they occur during the year. The islands of Japan lie in the temperate and at the northeastern end of the monsoon area. The climate is generally mild, although it varies considerably from place to place when you travel Japan. Summer, which is warm and mild, begins around the middle of July following a rainy season that usually lasts for a month. Except in northern Japan the winter is mild with many sunny days. Spring and autumn are the best seasons of the year with balmy days and bright sunshine.

About the People
Before you depart to travel Japan, it’s a good idea to get a sense of the people and their culture. Japan is one of the most densely populated nations in the world, with some 330 persons per square kilometer (almost 860 persons per sq. mi.). The Japanese are a Mongoloid people, closely related to the major groups of East Asia. However, some evidence also exists of a mixture with Malayan and Caucasoid strains. About 750,000 Koreans and much smaller groups of Chinese and Caucasians reside in Japan.

Religious Beliefs
When you travel Japan, you will be exposed to a new world of religious and personal beliefs. Buddhism is important in Japan’s religious life and has strongly influenced fine arts, social institutions, and philosophy. Most Japanese consider themselves members of one of the major Buddhist sects.

Shintoism is an indigenous religion founded on myths, legends, and ritual practices of the early Japanese. Neither Buddhism nor Shintoism is an exclusive religion. Most Japanese observe both Buddhist and Shinto rituals: the former for funerals and the latter for births, marriages, and other occasions. Confucianism, primarily an ethical system, profoundly influences Japanese thought as well.

About 1.3 million people in Japan are Christians, of whom 60% are Protestant and 40% Roman Catholic.

Rush Hour

If there is one thing that I hate, it’s sitting. I simply cannot sit still. What do I hate worse than sitting? Sitting in rush hour traffic on my way to work. Then, when I get there all I do, all day long, is sit in a tiny chair for eight hours. Sitting, and more sitting. It’s a wonder that my legs even work at all. Sitting is all I seem to do all day. It’s no wonder I’m so out of shape. I get no exercise. Unfortunately, there is no time for that in my ever so busy day of sitting.
What I need to do is start taking some of those diet supplements like Acceletrim. I have a friend that takes those and he says he’s losing weight just driving to work. And he has more energy to make it thought the traffic jam, just in time do do some more sitting at work. He even burns calories and fat just sitting at his desk all day. I think I will try some of that tomorrow. Maybe I’ll have enough energy to make it to work without falling asleep on the way.
What I really need to find are some really good shortcuts. The problem with finding a really good short cut, is that someone is always following right behind you. And since most people take the same route to and from work everyday, chances are that they will take you shortcut again. Then somebody will follow them. Then what you have is everybody takings your short cut. Get a map and find the shortest route to where you are going using only residential streets and you can beat the highway traffic every time.

WAP for Webmasters

What is WAP?

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a standard technology that enables Cellular Phones to connect to the Internet and view stripped down Web Pages and Services.

WAP uses similar concepts to the desktop Internet we are all familiar with. The Cellular Phone has embedded WAP Micro-Browser software capable of displaying WML (Wireless Markup Language). The user enters the URL of a WAPSite into the Micro-Browser and this request is forwarded to a WAP Gateway. The WAP Gateway resides within the Cellular Carriers network providing an interface between the Phone and the Internet. The WAP Gateway retrieves WML content from conventional web servers on the Internet and returns it to the Phone to be displayed by the Micro-Browser.

Why do we need WAP?

Is another markup language really needed? In a word – Yes! The constraints of mobile devices and networks such as low bandwidth, high latency, low memory, and small display capabilities mean conventional Internet protocols (HTTP/TCP/IP) are unsuitable for use in the wireless environment. It is not feasible to automatically translate HTML designed for a high-resolution monitor onto a three or four line Cellular Phone display. WAP is a standardised way to provide efficient and reliable access to Internet based information and services via Cellular Phones.

How to WAP enable your existing website

If you already know HTML you will find learning WML very easy. There are less tags and most follow the conventions of HTML. The main differences between developing for the Web and Wap are the small screen size, monochrome images only, and slow connection considerations. Well-designed WAP applications provide a simplified web-like experience.

WAP is about providing access to relevant information from any location – news, email, sports results and banking have all been successfully translated to WAP. End-to-end security is provided by WAP so applications such as Banking and Mobile Commerce are as safe as conventional E-Commerce sites. Intelligence can be added to your WAP applications by using WMLScript, which is similar to JavaScript.

Anyone can write WML content and upload it to a web server in the same way as publishing HTML pages. Server side scripting such as Perl, PHP, ASP, and Java Servlets can all be used to output dynamically created WML content. In many cases the hard work of creating the backend of the website has already been done and the WAP conversion is a relatively quick and painless process.

The constraints of the WAP environment and tight syntax of WML are actually a blessing in disguise. Developers have much less scope to format the layout of content compared to HTML design and thus deployment time is dramatically reduced.

Why choose WAP?

By choosing WAP you are building applications and services that are accessible across all WAP enabled Phones and Cellular networks (GSM, CDMA, TDMA and 3G in the future). You will reach a much wider audience as the number of Cellular phone users now exceeds that of Desktop PC users. WAP is an evolving technology that is capable of maturing as the wireless data industry evolves and is an extremely powerful tool to extend your website’s reach beyond the conventional Desktop PC.
