The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an extensive awareness campaign for London-based migrant construction workers, after the findings of a Synovate research suggested that such workers were most prone to workplace risks.

The research says foreign construction workers are particularly vulnerable to potentially dangerous practices at work. One of the three communities receiving advice is the Polish community. Newly arrived Indian workers and Romanian workers are also being informed about health and safety rights.

The research took notice of the accidents on construction sites and gave valuable inputs to the HSE, pointing at the vulnerability of a particular group of workers. It concluded that the knowledge of migrant construction workers about the UK’s health and safety standards is quite vague and that some have not even heard of the HSE.

The HSE’s recent campaign aimed at the Polish workers is an effort to make them aware of the organization’s role in safeguarding their interests and to help them know that their rights to a safe and healthy working environment are at par with British workers.

Philip White, Chief Inspector of Construction at the HSE, acknowledged that information on health and safety needed to be disseminated to the more vulnerable construction workers. He said that cutting down the risks faced by the more vulnerable would not only enable all construction workers to work in safe conditions, but also help reduce potentially dangerous accidents on site.
