| Malaysian Shuttler Gets Two-Year Ban for Quitting National Team | Comments Off |
Tan Chun Seang, one of the top shuttlers for the Malaysian team, won’t be able to put his badminton rackets to use in international competitions for a while after the national badminton committee decided to ban him from doing so in the next two years.
According to reports, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided to ban Chun Seang in participating in any international badminton tournaments for the next two years because the players decided to quit the national squad. Chun Seang became the first in Malaysia’s badminton history to get this ban.
BAM basically has the authority to send players in international competitions because the players need the endorsement by the national body in order to compete.
Chun Seang, currently 22 years of age, decided to end his five-year stint with the national team due to family problems. The decision was made a few days after Malaysia’s national coach Hendrawan decided not to include the young shuttler in the Vietnam Open. The coach reasoned that Chun Seang lacked the necessary badminton racquet training to compete in these high level tournaments.
Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, BAM president, said that they will be reviewing other cases in the future and the punishment or ban will be based on the gravity of the circumstance. He reasoned that now is the time for the organization to start safeguarding its program.
Despite this development, Mohd Salleh said that they have accepted Chun Seang’s resignation. The ban, he reasoned, was made in order to avoid instances where the player may cite family problems from leaving the national squad yet they could be seen competing in tournaments a few months later.
