There will be a lot of badminton shuttlecock action in an upcoming three-day badminton tournament for specially-abled badminton players in Dehradun.

According to reports, more than 70 specially-abled players are scheduled to participate in the tournament, the first of its kind to be hosted by the Uttarakhan state in India.

The participants are players with hearing disability but still have the capability to compete in sports such as badminton which also relies on quickness of the body and eye movement. The shortcoming could be pinpointed on their hearing which could be a factor. The tournament serves a chance for these players to showcase their skills to the public.

Tournament director Prem Kumar said that he feels good being part of the tournament, stating that the players couldn’t contain their happiness for having been given the chance to participate. Kumar himself attended the recently concluded Paralympics in China.

Kumar added that the tournament encourages the specially-abled players to interact more with the public and also meet fellow players who can relate with their situation. New friendships will certainly be built during the tournament.

Tournament referee Sanjay Chauhan echoed Kumar’s statements, saying that the less fortunate players will have their confidence boosted with these kinds of tournaments because their skills are not ignored by the society.
